Why the Grind is Costing You More Than You Realize

Why the Grind is Costing You More Than You Realize

You tell yourself that if you just work harder, push through the exhaustion, and silence your doubts, everything will pay off. You ignore the headaches, the sleepless nights, the tension in your chest, because success demands sacrifice, right? But what happens when the grind doesn’t reward you - it breaks you? When the life you’ve built starts to crack under the weight of expectations, and no amount of effort can hold it together?

The Cost of Pushing Through

NBA star Kevin Love knows this reality firsthand. For years, he embodied toughness - on the court, in the media, and in his own mind. But in 2017, in the middle of a game, everything unraveled. A panic attack hit him like a freight train, sending him into the locker room gasping for air, his world spinning. For the first time, he couldn’t just push through. He had to face the truth: the grind was costing him more than he realized.

I know that truth, too - but for me, it came in an even more brutal way. On January 1, 2017, I went to sleep and didn’t wake up for three days. My body, after years of ignoring the warning signs, had completely shut down. I was trapped in a coma, my life hanging in the balance. And when I finally opened my eyes, I was forced to confront a terrifying realization: the relentless pursuit of success, the refusal to slow down, the belief that I could always push through - none of it had made me stronger. It had nearly killed me.

In his essay, "Everyone Is Going Through Something," in the March 2018 edition of the Player’s Tribune, Love wrote, “Mental health is an invisible thing, but it touches all of us at some point or another.” His openness became a turning point - not just for himself, but for athletes and high achievers everywhere who had been suffering in silence.

For me, waking up from that coma was my turning point. It forced me to ask myself: What is all this effort really for? And at what cost?

Why the Grind is a Lie

The grind keeps you trapped convinced that more effort equals more success. It dangles the possibility of a better future, but only if you sacrifice your well-being today. The problem? That trade-off isn’t real.

Kevin Love had everything, money, fame, an NBA championship, yet none of it protected him from what was happening inside. He had spent years living in the grind, believing that toughness meant never showing weakness. But a better future became real when he faced the truth: that relentless pushing wasn’t making him stronger, it was breaking him.

By choosing to be vulnerable, Love stepped into what most feel is impossible - the space where real transformation happens. He redefined strength, not as suppressing emotions, but as addressing them head-on. He didn’t just survive his struggles; he used them to realign his life with who he was truly created to be.

What Is the Grind Costing You?

The world rewards relentless ambition, but it never warns you about the price. You feel exhausted, disconnected, and maybe even resentful of the success you’re chasing. Love’s experience proves that the cost isn’t just mental - it’s physical, relational, and spiritual.

He admitted, “Being depressed is exhausting... Battling depression, battling anxiety... it’s all just so unbelievably exhausting.”

When was the last time you paused and asked yourself: Am I actually living, or just surviving?

Breaking Free: The Power of Vulnerability

Vulnerability isn’t a detour - it’s the way forward. For Love, admitting he needed help wasn’t easy, but it was the first real act of strength he had made in years. He later founded the Kevin Love Fund, dedicated to breaking the stigma around mental health and creating equity between physical and emotional well-being.

By embracing vulnerability, he found freedom. And you can, too.

Ask yourself:

  • What are you grinding for - and at what cost?

  • Is success worth it if you lose yourself in the process?

  • What would happen if you stopped proving and started aligning?

Redefining Strength & Success

Kevin Love’s story challenges the idea that success is about how much pressure you can endure. True success isn’t about surviving - it’s about thriving. He now advocates for a life where mental health is treated as equally important as physical performance, where pushing forward doesn’t mean pushing yourself to the brink. He writes, "It’s okay to not have it all together all the time... what’s important is that we keep showing up for ourselves, and for each other, every day."

Imagine what your life could look like if you stopped grinding and started realigning.
